Due to Columbus Day, this month’s meeting is on Tuesday October 11th. Several people have reached out to me about this meeting. It appears that this meeting is packed full of items. There are a couple that I would like to walk through before the meeting. You will need to decide for yourself if you would like to attend and speak on these items. It has only been in the last year that citizens have been able to speak at these planning meetings. I would call it a privilege, but addressing your government is a right, not a privilege.
The first two items Tuesday are not public hearings, but I know there will be public interest.
Drew Christenson, realtor, is ready for his plat approval on his portion of the town center. This is the property map showing the parcel. This is on the Sumner County side.
The second item on the agenda is Lennar Homes again. This is the Burrus Ridge property on New Hall Road that citizens showed up at various meetings and fought against. This property is already zoned R-20. They have this zoning and have been annexed since roughly 2008. During the Lennar led meeting, they stated that they would not build there for less than 850 homes. They also threw out numbers that they would “donate” toward stop lights and road improvements if the zoning was changed allowing them 959 homes. New Hall and 76 have failing traffic scores now. Here is the question to ask your planning board- How can this be stopped? There has to be a legal way to halt this project. It is not personal, it’s matter of numbers and infrastructure. A city cannot be held hostage by developers because the zoning was approved 14 years ago. Two other developments, several new homes, and 45 townhomes are all going in or have been started in that section of town. TDOT doesn’t have plans for a traffic light until roughly 2035, and Lennar has yet to put in the traffic light on Tyree that was promised. What is the legal recourse the city and its citizens have? I do not have the answers to these questions. This is not a public item, but you can email the planning board and talk to them before the meeting.
I’ll be honest, I have not looked at #6. Zoning laws are not my area of expertise.
This is the property for #7. I have written on the properties off of Union Road behind the Lowe’s on several occasions. This property is owned by Paula Melton, former planning board member and candidate for county commission.
This is a done deal. This is one of the properties that the Robertson County Economic Development Board has options on. This is the only property in the list of properties that has not been annexed into the city.
If you want more information on this situation, I have another Substack written about all of the properties and the plans for them here. This is to expand the industrial area.
The last item of interest to the community is #8, the annexation of the Sumner County Schools’ property where they have started construction on the new elementary school. It is not at all suprising that they are asking for annexation.
Tuesday night at 7pm at city hall is this meeting. If you are concerned about these issues, make plans to attend.
